Psychological Testing to Provide the Correct Diagnosis

Assessment vs. Psychological Testing

When someone seeks therapy for mental health issues, psychological testing is sometimes the initial step. Because of the stigma associated with mental health treatment, the concept of a psychological exam may be terrifying to some people. Consider psychological testing in the same way that diagnostic tests in other domains of medicine are used. If your arm hurts, your doctor could suggest getting an x-ray to figure out what’s wrong and recommend a treatment plan. Similarly, if you are suffering from mental, emotional, or behavioral problems that are making your life more difficult, you should get help from a skilled mental health professional. Psychological testing is used to provide you with the best possible treatment plan and outcome.

What Does the Psychological Examine Consist of?

During a psychological examination, a mental health practitioner will ask a set of standard questions about the patient’s symptoms. Providers utilize these replies to determine whether or not someone meets the diagnostic criteria for a particular diagnosis. There are a variety of psychological tests available. A psychological evaluation allows mental health specialists to look at a range of data to get a full picture of a patient’s mental health.

A provider may consider the following during a psychological evaluation:

• Psychological test results

• Informal conversations

• Clinical interviews

• School or work records

• Communication with the patient’s family, friends, teachers, or social workers

The information is then used by a physician to make a diagnosis and create a treatment plan.

Is the Psychological Testing like they have in Schools?

A psychological test is not the same as the tests kids take in school. There is no such thing as a wrong response or a failure in psychological testing. The exam will be beneficial to you if you are honest with your provider. Your provider may ask you the question out loud and then mark their responses, or they may provide you a pencil and paper and tell you to do it on your own. Please inform your provider if you prefer one technique over another. Each test has a separate set of questions. Expect to be asked questions regarding symptoms you may or may not be experiencing.
