What are Crisis Intervention/Stabilization?

The perception or experience of an incident or circumstance as an unacceptable hardship that transcends the person’s present resources and coping skills is characterized as a crisis.

  • A crisis may be defined as any scenario in which an individual sees a sudden lack of capacity to apply effective problem-solving and coping abilities.

  • A crisis can be defined as any of the following events or circumstances: life-threatening occurrences (such as an earthquake or tornado), sexual assault or other criminal victimization; medical disease; mental illness; suicidal or homicidal thoughts; and loss or extreme changes in relationships (death of a loved one or divorce, for example).

  • Crisis intervention is the provision of immediate and temporary treatment to an individual in order to break the downward spiral of manipulative behavior and return the individual to their pre-crisis level of functioning.

  • Crisis intervention also refers to the approaches used to provide urgent, short-term assistance to those who have been affected by an event that causes emotional, mental, physical, or behavioral discomfort or issues.

Goals of Crisis Intervention/Stabilization

There are numerous goals to crisis intervention. It seeks to:

  • Reduce the severity of an individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and behavioral reactions to a crisis; and

  • Assist persons in returning to their pre-crisis level of functioning.

  • Improve functioning above and beyond this by learning new coping skills and avoiding inefficient coping strategies such as withdrawal, isolation, and drug misuse.

  • Assist the individual in dealing with future challenges more successfully.

By talking about what happened and their feelings about the situation, Crisis Intervention can offer support to the individual that is recovering from a crisis. Crisis Intervention helps in preventing major long-term issues from forming while establishing methods to manage future mental health episodes.
