Group Therapy

HELPING OTHERS THROUGH GROUP THERAPY.

What are Adjustment Issues?

Group therapy is a type of psychotherapy in which one or more therapists deal with a group of people at the same time. Group therapy is occasionally used alone, but it is more often than not integrated into a full treatment plan that also includes individual therapy.

What does therapy look like?

In many circumstances, the group will gather in a room with seats arranged in a big circle so that everyone in the group can see everyone else. A session may begin with members of the group introducing themselves and explaining why they are in group therapy. Members may also discuss their experiences and developments since the last meeting. The actual format of the session is determined by the group’s goals and the therapist’s approach. Some therapists may advocate for a more free-form kind of discussion in which each participant engages as they see fit. Other therapists have a defined agenda for each session, which may involve having participants practice new skills with other group members.

The following are some of the benefits of group therapy:

  • Group therapy helps participants to get the support and encouragement of their peers. Participants in the group can see that others are going through similar experiences, which might make them feel less alone.

  • Members of the group can act as role models for other members of the group. Other members of the group might realize that there is hope for healing by witnessing someone effectively coping with a problem. As each individual advances, they may become a role model and a source of encouragement for others.

  • Group therapy provides a secure sanctuary, which may help build emotions of achievement and accomplishment.

  • The environment allows people to practice behaviors and activities while remaining safe and secure as a group.

  • Working in a group allows the therapist to observe firsthand how each individual interacts with others and behaves in social circumstances.

  • The therapist can use this information to give helpful feedback to each client.
